Pressure damage on MacBook Pro screen
MacBook Pro displays are thin enough that pressure on the closed lid — a bag with a charger inside, a hand leaning on it, something left between the keyboard and screen — pushes the layers of the LCD together.

Full-screen white shows dark pressure marks and lines; full-screen grey shows blotches; black shows bright spots. Marks that sit in the same place on all three are in the panel.
What it is
MacBook Pro displays are thin enough that pressure on the closed lid — a bag with a charger inside, a hand leaning on it, something left between the keyboard and screen — pushes the layers of the LCD together. The result is dark or bright blotches, thin dark lines, or a patch that looks like a bruise, usually without any crack in the glass. On a Retina display it can also show as a rainbow or colour-shifted patch.
Can it be fixed?
No — the liquid crystal is physically deformed and does not recover. Apple treats it as accidental damage: not covered by the standard warranty, covered by AppleCare+ for an accidental-damage fee. Independent repairers replace the display assembly for less.
What to do
- Photograph on white and grey.
- Check whether you have AppleCare+ (Settings → General → About → Coverage).
- Get both an Apple quote and an independent quote; the difference is large.
- Stop keeping anything on the keyboard when the lid closes, and carry the MacBook in a sleeve.

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
